The house is looking pretty good.. from the outside. Another coat of plaster (except for the front of the house where there is none yet), and some paint and it will be finished. The plasterer is away on another job but will come back to finish ours.

Steven has cleaned out the inside, and almost finished half of the ceiling. Next step is either the strawbale walls or the floorboards, I forget which. Also the gib board for the interior walls. We have a builder coming next week to do the bathroom! I have yet to choose a bath... or a sink... or any tiles. I think after 4 years of house research, actually having a deadline for something comes as a bit of a shock!

See those posts on the verandah? That's where my hammock will be strung. Even though I'll have two children and a full time job when the house is finished, I still fantasise that long periods of my day will be spent hammock-bound.

I will take some interior shots soon and blog those too.

Hey, it's looking great! Sitting in Cardiff, listening to the traffic, I'm imagining the view from "our" sunny room.

People have been asking about the house progress, so I thought I'd do a quick blog update. I feel like (maybe I've said this before??!!) we are ALMOST there. Like just around the corner we'll have the plasterer, and the carpenter (doing the floors) and the plumber... and then we can move in. There are probably 300 other jobs I don't know about, but hey, at this stage I'd rather not know.

The roof is on. The house is wrapped in building paper (almost ready for plastering):

Houseland-mar12-009.jpg

The windows are all in (that was a job and a half - at least for someone who isn't a builder)..

Houseland-mar12-013.jpg
Houseland-mar12-015.jpg

The internal walls are almost finished (there aren't many, it's mostly open plan), and the wiring is done:

Houseland-mar12-016.jpg

Elmer's room (full of floorboards. Or it may be ceiling boards):

Houseland-mar12-018.jpg

And of course Elmer. And a dog.

Houseland-mar12-023.jpg

Looks almost finished doesn't it? (hee hee).

SOOOO, the plan is, I am here in NZ for another month, and then me and Elmer are heading back to the UK for two months (inbetween weddings). Without the distractions of such a good looking pair, Steven will power on with the house, and when I return all that will be left to do will be arranging scatter cushions and lighting a few mood candles.

Hopefully. But maybe not, since the house has taken a LITTLE bit longer than expected...

WOW!!! The house looks amazing!!! It's basically finished!!! I'd be moving in already! x

And we can buy the scatter cushion covers in Cardiff! Great to have the wiring done. M x

Sinead Jenkins:

I know, almost done! I'm the most impatient person on the planet so the waiting is very hard. Tempting to move in if it weren't for the huge gaping gap at the front of the house!

Hi Sinead, your house is looking fantastic. We are just about to start renovating our 90 year old cottage and I just wondered if you would share with me who did your window joinery? It is exactly what I'm looking for ... cheers Di

Steven the Husband:

Hi D Reddy. On our way back from the UK we stopped off in India. I'd been a few times before and had found an area that specialised in joinery and furniture. That's where the windows, doors, kitchen and furniture all came from. The windows are made from Teak, (as is everything listed above except for some of the furniture). I figured if it was the only surviving wood left on the Titanic then it should last a few Dunedin winters.

John Becker:

Tres bien! Marvellous. Looking forward to the next update...
Oer! Does this mean with Sinead being in Blighty for the next two months that we are not going to GET an update for 3 months? Steven, you better start getting click-happy and posting on your lovely wife's blog!

We rented a crib (I believe that's what I'm meant to call the holiday cottage here) in Peel Forest, near Geraldine for me, Elmer and my parents. All we did for 5 days was walk in the forest, go to the park, eat nice food, play records on the old record player, read books and play scrabble. There was a tree house in the garden that Elmer climbed to fly his helicopter, and a little bridge over a stream. The television was in a cupboard and pretty much stayed there the whole time. I must say, I feel a lot more relaxed than I did before we left.

Oh and Elmer is totally in love with his grandparents.

Helene and Nick met in London, on a train. He offered her some gum, and.. she likes gum. She is from Venzuela and is half french half spanish, and he is from Dunedin, so their families live on different continents. They only wanted a really small, simple wedding, but planned a slightly bigger one for the sakes of family and friends, and it was gorgeous. I got to meet everyone at a drinks reception the day before, and it was lovely to see people over the course of two days, chatting, becoming friends. Helene's family and best friends flew over from South America.

The wedding was emotional. Nick's mum sewed hundreds of sequins onto Helene's dress and it was lovely to see her reaction when she saw Helene wearing it that morning. Oh and Nick's reaction when he saw his wife to be. Actually, everyone's reaction when they saw Helene!

There were lots of tears, lots of jokes, lots of beautiful accents, lots of dancing. If you want some crazy skilled dancing at your wedding, why not invite some Latin Americans?

Helene trained as a makeup artist in a previous life, so she did everyone's makeup! One day, I am also going to look that good in my dressing gown...

Gemma and Jordan are possibly the most excited-to-be-engaged people I've ever met! They're fabulous. They also have a hilarious dog called George (a girl), who managed to feature in quite a few of these shots. George has her own bedroom. I'm keeping that information quiet around here...

Lush. Isn't it beautiful afternoon light at this time of year?

Elmer is a lot better. He's well enough to be WIDE AWAKE at 9.30pm (yawn).
