Posed Wedding Photographs...

I was chatting to a lady recently about her daughter's wedding photography. She admitted the photographs were not her cup of tea - too many black and white documentary images, and not enough posed family photographs. Sounds like my kind of photographer! Her daughter had organised the photography to her liking, but the mother was disappointed that she didn't have a posed photograph of her husband and herself together.

At the weddings I shoot, I don't suggest specific posed photographs unless a couple has written them on my 'group photographs' list or if they ask me at the wedding. More often than not I am busy shooting all the events and details of the day and don't stop unless asked.

Here's a tip for any of my brides and grooms to be for this coming wedding season.. Let your guests know that I am primarily a documentary photographer, and if a guest or mother of the bride wants a shot of themselves with their husband/child/auntie I am more than happy to oblige. Just ask!

I'm just back from Winchester where I photographed my cousin Aislinn's wedding. Elmer was in attendance, and was looking very dapper in his new baby wedding outfit!!! This is him at the end of the night with my sister:

Chris and Leah's Wedding, Cardiff

This is the first of a couple of weddings I'm shooting in the UK whilst I'm here.

We've known Chris and Leah since Steven worked with Chris about 6 or 7 years ago, and they are two of the sweetest, most genuine people I've ever met. It was an absolute pleasure to photograph their wedding (finally!), and they were smiling, happy and gorgeous all day long.

A nice aspect about shooting in the UK is the abundance of beautiful old churches and hotels, two of which feature here. The wedding seemed so intimate, partly because every single person involved, from florist to cake maker to videographer (and photographer!) was either family or close friend. The church in Old St Mellons normally charges for bell ringing, but they loved Leah and Chris so much they put on the bells for free.

Oh and the weather behaved perfectly too! Cloudy at the church (great) and sunny later on for the reception.

I don't normally post blog images before I've finished all my wedding
editing, but Leah is very good at emotional blackmail and I'm posting
these for her and Chris to view whilst on honeymoon. Hence the huge number I've chosen! Enjoy you two...

<img alt="LeahandChris-003.jpg" src="http://www.sineadjenkins.com/blog/LeahandChris-003.jpg" class="mt-image-center" style="text-align: center;
In the old 1980 photograph album at my parent's house there are only a few photographs from each month. There may be a few more in Elmer's albums in the future!
Baby Ella

Ella is just a couple of weeks younger than Elmer, and is also Amanda and Dion's beautiful niece. She's such a sociable little smiler. She also has the most gorgeous nursery that I am very jealous of. Some of my favourites from our baby session...

I'm off to pack - tomorrow we leave for Christchurch and then to the UK. We have 5 hours in transit at Singapore airport, where I am looking forward to the possibility of relaxing on a sun lounger next to the rooftop swimming pool!!!! I am thinking solely of this, and of meeting Elmer's grandparents in London, and NOT the 36 hour plane trip with a 10 month old... who has a cold.... and is teething....

Elmer Photoshoot

It was such a beautiful evening. I was doing some digging in the garden when I noticed the light, and how chirpy Elmer was... so I dug out his bear suit and we did an impromptu photoshoot!

I remember when Elmer was 3 months old my sister said "Nine months is my favourite baby age". I thought, how can he get any cuter than he is now? I stand corrected. At 9 months, Elmer has perfected his hearty, side-splitting giggle. He finds everything funny; Steven choking on a fish bone; the dog wagging his tail; me sighing over a boring spreadsheet. It's nice to be reminded of how ridiculous we all are.

Before I leave for the UK next week I have another very cute baby to share on the blog...

Career watch

One of the nice things about my job is that when I photograph clients more than once, I can see how their lives have changed. Engagements, weddings, babies... and careers. Kim married Steve in March 2009, and I photographed her last week for a magazine article on a new aspect of their business, Raw Design. Kim is a New Zealand agent for ZWCAD - if you are after CAD software without the standard CAD price tag, Kim is the lady to speak to...

Oh and I have some very cute photographs of Elmer coming up!

My 31st Birthday

Partly I wanted to write this blog post so that every year I can look back and see what I did on the 15th July.

It's so strange having a birthday in New Zealand. Getting presents in winter feels like Christmas to me!

So.. this year I had a lie in (big deal!), a cooked breakfast and then we walked a track just down the road from here by Sullivan's damn. Steven bought me super-rich chocolate cake which I am going to force down now with a bit of red wine. Yum.

I know... SO cute!

This time last year I was pregnant with Elmer, we ate out at a fancy restaurant and I was drooling over Steven's white wine. The year before we were in China eating noodles after a Peking Duck disaster. Hopefully next year I will be having a party in our BRAND NEW HOUSE!

Travels and a Baby Passport

Just thought I would let everyone know my calendar for the next few months. Elmer and I will be out and about quite a bit and I don't want anyone to think I've forgotten them.

27th July: Fly out of Christchurch with Elmer, my friend Julie, and Elmer's baby friend Erin.

28th July: Arrive at London Heathrow and meet Elmer's Gran and Grandad!

12th August: Leah and Chris's wedding in Cardiff

21st August: Aislinn and Tom's wedding in Winchester

11th September: Aidan (my brother!) and Katie's wedding in Yorkshire

16th September: Fly out of London Heathrow headed back to New Zealand

25th September: NZ wedding season begins in earnest with a wedding up in sunny New Plymouth!

I also have a few portrait sessions to schedule in the UK so should be sorting those out before I leave, plus a couple of portrait sessions here in Dunedin before I go.

Elmer's passport is being approved as I write, despite the absolute mission of getting his passport photograph taken...

This isn't his passport photograph (but it is very cute) because: 1) His mouth is slightly open; 2) The background is white; and 3) His face takes up less than 70% of the image and is not aligned. If he was wearing sunglasses and a fake beard he would be breaking ALL the rules...

Cows

Steven and I already have the dogs, chickens and ducks to keep us company, but as of this week we are now the proud owners of ....four cows! Well, three cows and a male calf. These lovely animals were part bequeathed to us so we feel very grateful - not only are they fine specimens, but they are also extremely good natured and.. well... good looking! The baby is 2 months old and half Highland (big and furry), and two of the three cows are expecting similar calves in the spring. How exciting!

They all seem very content with their new home, and spend a lot of time at the top of the field, watching me, Steven and Elmer go about our business. Oh and Elmer finds the sight of anything munching on hay delightfully funny...

I have a couple of baby shoots coming up, and will be blogging some more Elmer too of course...

Emma and Hugh's Wedding, Queenstown

Most of the locations Emma and Hugh chose for their Wedding could have been part of a dramatic film set, which is apt since they both work in television - Emma is a documentary maker! They married in the candle lit Gibbston Vineyard wine cave, then headed over the snow capped mountains as the sun set to their reception at the old Cardrona Hotel (log fire, mulled wine, cosy cosy cosy!). Every detail was elegant and perfectly chosen for a beautiful winter wedding. Even more impressive was the fact that it was all planned from Auckland, and I met Hugh and Emma for the first time on the eve of their wedding.

Although the indoor lighting was a bit of a challenge - I love that I had a chance to capture the mood and atmosphere of each spot.. I really wanted to do these beautiful places justice. Plus one of my pet hates is using flash during a ceremony (I have yet to encounter a location that requires extra lighting), and if I can capture a wedding in a cave without flash, I'm happy! For any photography types.. I was shooting inside at ISO 3600, f1.4.

Sometimes it's fantastic to work with other film/photography types since they understand the importance of giving me free reign! Welcome to my photography heaven...

<img alt="hughandemma093.jpg" src="http://www.sineadjenkins.com/blog/hughandemma093.jpg" class="mt-image-center" style="margin: 0pt auto 20px; And I mean wearing two jackets, thick socks and a hat and it's-still-cold kind of COLD. I could have easily shot here for another 4 hours, but I didn't want anyone to hate me so we moved on after a couple of minutes. I have to say, I could see the glow of the sunset on the snow-capped mountains in the rearview mirror as we drove off and I was slightly dying inside.

Thank you Emma and Hugh for such a fabulous, emotional wedding, and for being your lovely selves infront of the camera.

As Emma and Hugh partied into the night, Steven and I were driving back to Dunedin. A journey where we discovered that Elmer is scared of the dark - he sleeps with a dim light on at home - scared enough to sob in the back whenever we left a street-lit area. So I sat with him and held his hand until he fell asleep, the poor mite. I remember having a glow worm toy when I was little, so I'll have to get him something like that for any future night journeys. Such a sensitive soul!!

Exciting House Beginnings!

Well, these are just the first two bits of wood that will eventually form the walls of the bathroom in our house, but I cannot tell you how elated I was to see them go up this week! Steven says things should happen fairly quickly now we are onto the actual building stage of the build, rather than all that dull foundation work.

Even as I type this, there are about 6 other bits of wood joining these two, but I'm only just getting around to blogging. They are very tall, and make me think how big the house will seem compared to our little barn conversion.

The last few days I've been dreaming about the finished product. In particular:

- I want a wind-break slatted fence to go around the edge of the garden area to make the house all cosy and enclosed. I wonder if we'll be able to afford this when the house is finished?

- What type of bath will we have?

- I would like Elmer to have a really magical, colourful bedroom. I wonder what I'll do with his room...

Here's the boy himself examining his Dad's handywork...

I'll blog as much of the build as I can over these next few weeks. If it doesn't rain constantly that is..........

Baby Edward

I photographed baby Edward with his lovely parents Tyler and Chuan, at home in their beautifully renovated Dunedin villa. Their whole house could have gone into my Ideas scrapbook for our build! We spent the session doing baby things - playing, having a bath in the kitchen sink, dressing up as a cat, lazing around on fluffly blankets...

Edward is so full of character and smiles, and didn't get grumpy the whole time I was there, very impressive - Elmer, take note.

Lush!
