I loved shooting this wedding for two reasons. One was that Travis was (hand on heart) the happiest groom I have EVER seen marrying his bride Deborah. The ceremony was heartfelt but also illicited lots of happy laughter from the guests because of his sheer, unabashed contentment. He and Deb have the most beautiful, solid relationship, and their love for eachother is inspiring.

Also... the weather was typically New Zealandish, and after it pelted down with rain just before we shot the family groups, followed by some cloud cover, the sun suddenly appeared, and we had the most beautiful sunny evening (best time of year for the light of course). Inbetween, as we travelled along the peninsula, there was a rain storm out at sea, so we skipped over a bit of rough grass to make the most of the colours and light.

Ceremony at Pukehiki Church, and a reception at Larnach Castle....

BUT, I have also been doing lots of editing and slideshow creating, and nice weddingy things. One of them is this wedding, my first ceremony out at Orokonui Eco Sanctuary, which is a mere few minutes from my house! Shamefully, I have never properly been inside the sanctuary, always waiting for visitors to be here so I can take them and... they can hold my children for me. Pretty cool that my first time through the big security gates was for a sunset wedding overlooking the beautiful Blueskin Bay.

Jo and Nik are some of the nicest people you could hope to meet. Family and friends are uber important to them, and although it was a beautiful, detailey wedding, the focus was on the ceremony, having fun, and enjoying the celebration.

As I probably said to them about 400 times (sorry), the light at this time of year, at the golden hour before sunset, IF it is a lovely sunny day, is the BEST LIGHT of the entire wedding season, in my humble opinion. The risk is of course that it might be cloudy and quite cold, but Jo and Nik took the risk and it paid off beautifully.

Oh and check out the sunset!! Straight out of camera, no lie. We've had some amazing sunsets around here recently.

What better place to start though than the wedding of Amy and Chris, who married at Islington in Mosgiel followed by a reception at the Rowing Club. Looking back on the images I realise how autumnal they are, with the oranges and yellows in the trees and all the beautiful falling leaves. It felt like the end of summer on the day though, it was warm, with just the right amount of afternoon sunlight coming through the haze. Amy had hung lanterns in the big tree at Islington, and during the ceremony leaves gently fell to the ground. It was lovely. The day before we discussed getting some sunset shots on the balcony at the Rowing club, and the timing turned out perfectly for us. I took some shots as I drove home too, with the light disappearing from the sky.

Amy had a very definite and confident style for this wedding. I loved the stationary, details, the messages on her shoes, the lawn games, and Amy's beautiful custom made dress. The timings were great, and it felt like people had plenty of opportunity to chat, mingle and enjoy the sun.

Amy and Chris compliment eachother beautifully.. I enjoyed photographing these two.

In my head I wanted Elmer the robot in a forest, but driving to a forest with a 3 year old and a new baby purely to take 3 holga shots seemed like utter luxury! I quite like these anyway since they are of the moment, at our place.

I shot a few frames with my holga years ago that LOVE and I'm going to print them up nice and big for the house. When my wedding season is over I will be blogging some images of the house (in it's still unfinished state) and hopefully some more personal work. In the meantime, back to this wedding blog!

The place Jo and Paul chose for their wedding suited them to a T. It was a warm, overcast day, and Dansey's Pass Inn is situated on a long dirt road that leads through a mountain pass, so it feels snug and closed in by the surrounding hills. The wedding was simple and earthy, with lovely elegant and stylish touches. Jo and Paul were ultra relaxed with me, and gave me full license to do my thing, which felt great.

A small ceremony was followed by drinks and canapes in the Inn, a few photos up on the mountain road, and then an intimate candlelit dinner. Lots of lovely little things to photograph along the way, including children, details, rabbits and a crafty goat.

I totally fell in love with this wedding...

This serves as a reminder for me to say - I want more confetti shots.. I've noticed a downturn in confetti at weddings and for me this is a sad thing. I love confetti and I want to encourage my clients to use it!

Life with two small children, and a mostly-work-from-home job is quite busy. That would be an understatement actually. At this time of night (10pm) my brain almost ceases functioning completely, but I can just about manage to arrange some nice photographs of my baby. Goodnight!

It rained softly, and people stood under umbrellas to watch them say say their vows to eachother. It was a beautiful, personal day for a couple who are obviously deeply in love. Partly encouraged by my advice that the late afternoon sun is beautiful at this time of year (ahem...) Sarah and Josh planned their ceremony for 4pm. The day before when we met up for a chat, I was excited about how lovely the sun would look coming through the trees, despite the fact that is was really hot. However... sometimes nature throws us a challenge, and because it rained, we captured some more soft, intimate shots that I love. Somehow I think they suit Sarah and Josh's relationship so much more. Besides, it was sunny for the engagement shoot and you can't have it all!

Not much time to write tonight, have to put the boys to bed and want to get this online..

I don't want to sound like a fake. I don't want to sound like some annoying internet type who says "oh look at me with my wonderful job and wonderful clients and everything is wonderful!" It's not always wonderful. Wedding photography can be stressful and challenging and exhausting. But the reason I do this job is because amongst all of that are moments of great happiness and reward, and this wedding was kind of a moment like that.

I feel like I could tell you quite a lot about Janna and Grant, and about their families. Grant is from the UK, and has travelled over to Dunedin to follow his love, Janna. Family and friends made the big trip over to New Zealand for the wedding, flying home again today (the day I always dread with my family), so this will be a very emotional time for them.

Like a lot of families, Janna and Grant are very close to theirs, but unlike a lot of people they wear their hearts on their sleeves, so it is easy to see how much love they have for everyone. That's partly why I enjoyed photographing them so much, and partly why I don't need to write so much today. I'll just let the images talk.

Lush. That blog post took a while to get up - inbetween answering questions about cranes, diggers and trains, baby feeding, changing nappies and requests for strawberry milk - I got there in the end!
