This week we took some friends of ours from the UK to see the local wildlife here in Dunedin. We drove to Sandfly bay, which is a gorgeous quiet beach where you can hide and watch the little Yellow Eyed Penguins return from their hunting missions in the sea. If you're lucky you can see the little pingus climbing back up the sand dunes to see their wives and children, and sometimes you can see the Hooker Sea Lion - the rarest Sea Lion in the world!
I'm glad to have Steven around on these excursions because he's like a professional wildlife guide and points out things that I would have completely missed because I'm too busy gossiping or playing with my camera. Since no one else in our group has any clue where the elusive penguins or sea lions might be hiding, we all steathily follow Steven as he comes across important clues like sea lion pee... or little penguin tracks in the sand. We are busy standing around marvelling at the pee stain and Steven is already seeking out new exciting finds. I'm sure this is some innate talent that all New Zealanders possess, much like my innate British talent of discovering half price clothing bargains in town... ahem..

A penguin coming right out of the sea!

And then we came across these Hooker Sea Lions, and this mother and her cub playing in the sand. It was SO amazing to hide behind the dunes and watch them!

After a nice sunny weekend we had a really good dumping of snow in the middle of the week - I love snow! We spent some time out playing with the dogs, watching Nails trying to bury his bones in this marvellous white stuff.
