Chris and Scott: Wedding in Dunedin, New Zealand

This wedding was tiny and perfectly formed. Chris and Scott live in London, but returned to Dunedin for the first ceremony of their two part wedding, since Chris is originally from Dunedin – well, Waitati, his parents still live on my street(!) – and Scott is from the UK. The wedding here would be on a beautiful little tucked away beach between Waitati and Purakaunui, and the second part of the wedding would take place back in the UK in a gorgeous stately home. Two completely different ceremonies on opposite sides of the world, so that they could celebrate both of their roots and with both families present.

Of course I started my career photographing weddings in stately homes in the UK, and sometimes I miss those locations and the interesting dim light, but there is something equally special about marrying on a rugged and beautiful beach, especially when the afternoon light in NZ plays ball and is completely PERFECT.

Scott and Chris planned a very relaxed day and that’s exactly what it was. They greeted me at Chris’s parents’ home in shorts and tee shirts. Chris’s mother and sister in law were making sandwiches in the kitchen for later, and their nephew was playing with his uncle. After getting ready and exchanging gifts they headed out to Purakaunui for some simple portraits before making their way to the beach. This was such an eloquent and emotional ceremony. In front of the volcanic cliffs on a beach that was empty except for close family, Chris and Scott pledged themselves to each other with tears and laughter and beautiful words. It’s okay – I can cry and still take photographs! I was touched by how everything about this day was understated and simple, yet so well planned and…. enough. It was just perfect, and here are the images to show you why…
