The Kaan-Wood Family

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a family portrait blog, and this one makes me feel good about what I do. I just LOVE to capture people doing something they enjoy, somewhere beautiful. In New Zealand that can mean anywhere local, but the beaches at Purakanui are pretty special. The Wood family are often here cockling (hunting for cockles in the low tide), and collecting treasures. The boys are so familiar with the beach and the local wildlife it was a pleasure to listen to them and be a part of their morning adventure. They’re also gorgeous, and polite, with rich imaginations.

I see a lot of photographers focussing on showcasing little girls with all the frills and pink and prettiness that comes along with them. I love all that too, but what I love even more is REAL life, and celebrating real families. I’ll happily photograph this lovely family getting grubby on the beach, making a miniature sea city, swinging on tyre swings and hurling pine cones off the cliff anyday. What an amazing life for young kids! It makes me excited about my boys growing up and spending long summer days getting lost in adventures. The grubbier you are when you arrive back at the car, exhausted but happy at the end of the day, the better.
